What are some must-read books for someone going into graduate studies in anthropology? Why?

Answer by Zoletta Cherrystone:

  • The God Delusion, by Richard Dawkins
  • God is Not Great, by Christopher Hitchens
  • Before the Dawn, by Nicholas Wade

I've read these three recently, and have found each one to be brilliantly written with heaps and loads of information on how and why we've come to be the diverse world of people that we are, from religious extremists to 'rabid atheists' like our dear fellow Quora member, Alan Cohen .

I'm speaking figuratively, here, but if aliens came to Earth and asked, "Why is mankind divided as such, with so many different languages, religions, races, cultures and politics? Why do some people kill others, while still other people sacrifice the years of their lives to serve the needy? What is love, what is hate, why do some people take their own lives, why do animals eat each other, and why do humans eat animals? Why does every nation require a leader?"

I would hand them these three books, because that's where the best possible explanations can be found.
