Answer by Tejasvita Apte:

Legally no.

You are only required to show respect. That is all that is asked of Indian citizens.
You are not required to even sing. But yes, you are expected to respect. Which basically means that you are not supposed to do anything that shows your disrespect. That is all.

This issue came up in a case before the Supreme Court in Bijoe Emmanuel & Ors vs State Of Kerala & Ors (Citation here – Bijoe Emmanuel & Ors vs State Of Kerala & Ors on 11 August, 1986)

All the cases where people were arrested for not standing, if you read the facts carefully, you will see that they were also doing acts to show their disrespect. In some cases, they were found booing the National anthem or otherwise making gestures of disrespect. They were arrested for that.

It is the habit of Indian newspapers and media in general to not write complete facts and show the Indian law enforcement agencies in bad light.
