polity : Why-cant-we-make-Hindi-the-sole-official-language-of-India-to-develop-a-unique-identity -4
Answer by Prashanth Mohan:
- According to the most recent census, only 41% of the country's population are native speakers of Hindi. Now why would you want to force such a thing upon the rest of the nation.
- It goes against the ideals of the country. The idea of India as a country was always based around "unity in diversity". We cherish our diversity. We pride ourselves in being multi-cultural.
- It is logistically impossible to enforce this. Making Hindi the official language when the population does not understand it is useless. So how would you have the non-hindi speaking population start conversing in Hindi? Schools you say? Where a majority of the country does not get stick through 10th grade in school, they mostly get their education from family and friends.
